Springport Dairy - Harrisville. Otto Valdemar Klein – born on June 21, 1885 in Birkerod, Frederiksborg, Denmark. Passed April 9, 1951 in Harrisville, Alcona County. He married Astrid (Moller) Klein. Their children were Viggo Klein, Carl A. Klein, Ruth Klein & Otto Klein, Jr. Upon being married on February 13, 1913, Otto Sr. and Astrid immediately came to Northern Michigan from Denmark. Otto Sr. performed duties as the Superintendent at the Serra Della Dairy Farm near the county line. In 1920 Otto Sr. and Astrid left Serra Della and established the Springport Dairy Farm in Harrisville. One of his granddaughters, Ellen, married Dan Smith of Alpena who is the son of Harold Smith who owned the Alpena Dairy. His family notes many black pyro bottles from 1/2 pt to Qt and embossed 1/2 pt and cottage cheese. Reportedly he purchased a red/white/blue bottle at the end of WWII to celebrate that moment. I have never seen one, but 3 granddaughters attest to it's rarity.

Serradella Farms Dairy – on the border of Alcona and Iosco Counties – Carl E. Schmidt owned it; he had prize-winning dairy cows. He used agricultural methods from Germany to increase yield, including “serradella,” a type of legume that is more nourishing for cows than standard alfalfa. He was a wealthy industrialist and owner of a tanning enterprise in Detroit before his involvement in northern Michigan dairy and other industries. A portion of his land became "Serradella Farms," on Cedar Lake Road. Two of his beautiful barns still stand, but the rest of the farm is where Lakewood Shores golf course now operates. From the early 1904 to the mid 1930's, Schmidt oversaw a number of agricultural experiments. building a hotel, entertaining many German immigrants and raising his prized "Red Dane" cattle. He passed in 1934.
