Birchwood Farms - Harbor Springs Originally owned by Mr. Otis. Embossed bottles in Pt & QT. Run by Eddie Shepherd's uncle James R. Linderman in 37-44. Sold to Garstang's about 1944, The Garstangs were a resort family who were associated with Diamond "T" Co. (now it is known as Diamond Reo Co.). Still active as Garstang Birchwood in 1952/53. The dairy was later sold to Garstang and milk was in orange pyro Qt bottles labeled "Garstang/Birchwood Dairy". They were bought out by Harbor Springs Dairy in the 50's.

Chas. T. Lathers - Brutus, also known as the "Chickagami Dairy". 1925-1962.
Owned by Charles (Chic) T. Lathers born in 1888, professional ball player with the Detroit Tigers who retired in 1913, then worked for Ford Motor Company during WWI. In 1925, Lathers bought property on Burt Lake at Indian Point (also known as Colonial Point). Lathers built a dairy barn, which was still standing in 2006, a sheep barn, chicken coop, icehouse and other buildings. Lathers' farm bottled and sold unpasteurized milk from "his prized Golden Guernseys." He used giant chunks of ice cut from Burt Lake in winter to keep the milk chilled. For many years, Lathers also supplied the iceboxes of area resorters. Lathers continued to operate his dairy farm until 1962. |

Cloverdale Dairy - Petsokey - Originally owned by Al Foster, then his sons who bottled milk as the Foster Brothers, Frank and Ed Foster.
Frank is the father in law to Eddie Shepherd of Harbor Springs. Delivered milk by horses around 1925. They owned and milked the cows 1925-1955? Then they bought milk from Martincheks dairy in the 50's or 60's and delivered it until about 1970.. Frank and Ed started their dairy as young boys, Ed was still delivering around 1970 |

Crystal Springs Dairy - Harbor Springs. Crystal Springs dairy of Harbor Springs - owned by James Jablinski, began around 1924 and delivered milk until the late 1950’s. sold cream and milk. On the side of the delivery truck was “Babies are our Business”. Sold out to O.Parker in the 1950’s.

Fettig's Dairy - Petoskey In 1912, Martin and Mary Fettig was milking 9 cows and selling milk to John Steffle of Petoskey. This dairy is related to Martin, but was in the name of Albean J. Fettig (1908-1994).

1930 to 1967 (August) Originally owned by Frank McNamara, partnered with Lyle at some time. On 8-4-65. Owners Frank & Lyle McNamara purchased the Harbor Springs Dairy. They will continue to deliver products from the Wilson Dairy Brand (Detroit) to your door in Petoskey & Harbor Springs. Their office is located at 406 Liberty IN Petoskey. Then sold the dairy to Ideal Dairy of Traverse City in 1967. Sold Bottled glass bottled milk until 1950, then changed to cartons, later they become a Wilson Dairy distributor handling all of their products. |

Ideal Dairy - Petoskey about 1894-1923
Ideal Dairy operated from 1894 until near the time of William Notestine’s passing in 1925. He was born in 1852 in Ohio, then choosing to move to Bear Creek, just southeast of Petoskey. He & his wife Ida Ballard were married in Ohio prior to their moving to northern Michigan where they raised 7 children on the family farm. Bottles are known in Qt & Pt embossed. |

Maple Grove Dairy - Petoskey originally owned by William Atkin whose wife was still running a milk delivery in 1905 at the same time the Shanley family was also listed as a dairy in Petoskey in 1903. Dairy was later owned by Edward J. Shanley, then Wiford J. Shanley, operating the farm, delivering milk until 1947.

Maple Lawn Dairy - Owned by Nathan C. Shepherd & Son
1918-1939. N.C.'s son, Frank Shepherd became the next owner then changed the name to the Frank Shepherd Dairy. Nathan came from Montana to settle on a farm on Quick Road, 3 miles west of Pleasant View Road. Advertised his Phone 7005-F13. It is known he had bottle caps and believed to have name on bottles, but I have not seen one. He died in 1939 and left the dairy to his son, Frank operated the dairy until 1943 when it was sold to the Garstang Family, then combined with the Birchwood Farms to become the Garstang/Birchwood Dairy by 1944. |

Martin Soblesky Dairy - Petoskey
Martin Sobleski/Sobleskey was born in 10-24-1883, his parents were Johannes (John Sobelskey & Catherine). John passed on 3-21-35. John was milking cows and delivering milk as early as 1902, John was milking 28 cows with his family in 1912. Martin married Agnes Stawacki. She passed in 1949, Martin lived until 1968. Martin took over the family dairy about 1921. Martin & Agnes had 11 children together. Milk in 1/2 Pt emb bottles, probably Pt & Qt also. |

Sunnyside Dairy - Petoskey Originally owned by W. L. Preston. The W.L. Preston dairy was milking 27 cows in 1912, delivering bottled milk to the Petoskey area. It was known as the Sunnyside Dairy in 1918 records. It was in 1918 that the Preston’s house and barn was destroyed in a large fire and with the help of neighbors, he continued his dairy route, serving the needs of his customers until selling the dairy in 1920. Charles & Margaret Lund purchased the farm from W. L. Preston & Son in 1920. They milked cows & delivered milk with their 5 children. Their son Robert married Hazel Foster in 1923, (who was raised on the Foster Dairy farm of Petoskey). Hazel's sister Anne Foster was married in 1934 to Ed Shepherd of the Maple Lawn Dairy family of Harbor Springs. Hazel & Anne's uncle was John Sobelskey (Sobleski) who also owned his own dairy in the county.
